Building Biology and Building Physics

Clay construction, one of the oldest ways of building as such, has wrongly
fallen into oblivion. For clay, a particularly health-promoting building material,
creates a pleasant and healthy living and working environment through its
heat-retaining and humidity-regulating properties. Clay as a building material
compensates for a surplus of room humidity and then emits the absorbed
steam at times of low air humidity. This way clay acts as a free,
self-regulating "air-conditioning". Houses designed according to the principles
of passive utilisation of solar energy require heat accumulating mass on the
inside, e.g. clay walls and floors, in order to store energy generated during
the day and to emit it accordingly at a later stage.

Energy and Recyclability

Excavated clay material is transformed into building material instead of
ending up at spoil depots. Expenditure of energy for transport and processing
amounts to approx. 50 kWh/m.
In comparison to this the production of
reinforced concrete requires 500 kWh/m
and solid brick requires 1000 kWh/m,

that is, a considerably higher amount of energy consumption and
emissions. In addition to this clay may be recycled at the end of its service
life as a building material by breaking it up and soaking it in water.

Do-it-yourself houses, Clay press and Creativity
Clay bricks are traditionally manufactured in moulds. In order to increase
production we have developed a mobile clay press for use on site. With the
help of the press - even as DIY - approximately 15 tons of clay may be
processed by 6 workers operating the plant and put on duckboards for drying
(approx. 2-3 months). The clay bricks are made into inner walls using clay
mortar, trimmed with clay and finished with a whitewash. This is to avoid the
shrinkage of clay during the dryinprocess taking place inside the finished
wall. However, - similar to wet-clay-techniques -it still allows for many
different designs. Clay constructions demand and encourage your creativity.
